“Learn How eBay Sellers are Making $120,000 a Year!”

Written by Texas Tracy on January 17, 2008

Boy, I wish I could tell you how they do it. Because I cannot, I feel compelled to comment on this statement. This morning my husband pointed out this very phrase that appeared in a paid advertisement in our local paper. You can call and reserve a free seat to learn the secrets of some seasoned ebay pros in a short two hours. Wow…sign me up! Only two hours? But don’t some people endure eight years of college and still don’t make $120,000 a year? The bottom line is of course you won’t make $120,000 a year on ebay, at least not at first. Is it possible? Yes, but likely not to happen after a short two hour seminar. I have signed up for the course, and am now awaiting my “kit” that the operator assured me would answer all my questions. So, once I get the kit, I will give you my thoughts.
The fact is that if it were that easy to make $120,000 per year on ebay the entire economy of the United States would crumble because so many people would be bailing on their regular jobs to sell full-time on ebay. Yes, there are people who make $120,000 and then some on ebay. But, they are not as plentiful as this advertisement leads you to believe. Is it possible to make a very respectable amount on ebay? You bet. Enough to send your family on a nice vacation every year? You bet. Could you buy a car with what you make on ebay? You bet. Pay your child’s college tuition? Yes, if you work hard enough. Can you make $250 this month on ebay? Absolutely, this is an attainable goal. What you need to know is that ebay is indeed work, and you must be dedicated in order to succeed. My guess is that this “kit” of ebay nuggets will without a doubt mention drop shipping goods and where you never have to store, handle or even touch any of the items that you sell. Very risky, and you should proceed with caution prior to getting into something like this. There are reputable suppliers out there that you can find with internet research. But, that is not the only way to get items to sell. As mentioned before, your own home is a wealth of supply. You just gotta look. Have questions on what will sell? Send me an email.

Thanks for posting this, Tracy! I am so sick of seeing all of these “get rich quick on eBay” programs (scams) - and wish people would quit falling for them! My question here is, “If you are really making that kind of money on eBay, why are you helping your competition?” The key to eBay success is hard work, persistence, determination, and patience. As an entrepreneur, you will put in alot of unpaid hours before the profits come. eBay is no different.

    Happy selling!

Hello Suzanne! Thanks for the comment. I will refer someone if they email me asking for a particular bag, and I know I don’t have it in my inventory (I sell mainly designer handbags and accessories). Usually the sellers I recommend are those that I feel will treat someone fairly and will not sell them something that is fake. I feel I am doing them a customer service by sending them to someone who I know sells authentic items. In my realm of ebay there is such a proliferation of individuals and professional scammers selling fakes that it is hard for the regular customer to tell the difference. In addition, the fake handbags get better and better each day. Unless you see as many handbags as I do on a daily basis, it would be a challenge for you to discern between the real and fake. Happy selling to you!

Hey BeeJay! Thanks for the comment. First, as with most items sold on ebay, there is no one stop shop as a means to obtain your items for resale. The purse lists that you see on the Internet and which are periodically sold on ebay are bogus. Now, you can go another route and that is to purchase brand new handbags from department stores on really good sale and then turn around and mark them up for sale on ebay. You have some risk in that your profit margin may not be terrific. Another option is to find an outlet store, like Coach has here in Texas. I have never done this myself, because the location is just too far away, but it is possible to purchase from these stores for resale. There are probably some restrictions on returns so make sure you ask prior to purchasing anything. Bottom line, I have no recommendations for an easy way to obtain inventory. It takes practice, perseverance, and tenacity to find good sources. I will talk about this later, but in the meantime, just start looking everywhere you go. You will be surprised at what you find…
