Ebay Feedback Changes

Written by Texas Tracy on May 21, 2008

Ebay’s new feedback system really has me perplexed. Sellers can no longer leave negative or neutral feedback for buyers. Can someone explain to me how this is beneficial to the seller? Is is not necessary for the buyer to have some accountability in the transaction? I leave feedback after feedback has been left for me. I will continue to still do this-otherwise I have no leverage if a buyer is not happy. The only difference now is that they will just not receive a positive from me if things don’t go well. And, as always, if you are reading this, my satisfaction guarantee remains.

What if someone is truly a poor buyer? Over the years I have dealt with a few, but thankfully I can say that there were not many. Who are sellers to complain to? The customer service reps at ebay who know less than the average seller? Grrr…

Doesn’t make much sense, does it? All I can think is that eBay was trying to stop “retaliation feedback”. Perhaps they figured out, rightly, that many buyers don’t leave negative feedback for fear of getting it in return from the seller, and thought this was a proper solution. I think eBay is going through some sort of growing pains and it trying to find itself. I hope it succeeds.

Have you also noticed that UPI’s have really gone up? Last year I probably had 3 total UPI’s-I have had at least 8 in the last 6 weeks-YIKES! UPI’s are a seller’s only recourse for a bad buyer. However, if the buyer responds to the UPI forum-but still doesn’t pay-they can leave undeserved neg. feedback for you the seller-how crazy is that. I have also always left Positive feedback immediately once a buyer paid-NOT anymore! Speaking of UPI’s-since buyer can’t get Neutral or neg feedback-shouldn’t sellers at least see if a buyer has UPI’s?

Janel-Speaking of this very topic, I had an incident in the past two weeks where a buyer had bid on and won four (!) of my items…and of course this was the buyer who failed to pay in a timely fashion. Before I proceeded at all, I consulted with the ebay online chat support for advisement. Their recommendation? In lieu of an upaid buyer’s report, she suggested that I file a mutual agreement message (for those of you who are ebay newbies the mutual agreement message should be used when a buyer and seller MUTUALLY agree not to complete a transaction, such as in the case of an emergency or when the item gets damaged in some way prior to shipment, etc.). She went on to say that this way it would not negatively affect the offending buyer’s buying position on ebay and would lessen the risk of her filing a negative feedback for me on four transactions. So…that helps me how? And…we mutually agreed on NOTHING. She had only sent me one email saying she was watching some of my other items. But, they too had ended. And, I asked, would it not get her kicked off of ebay to have that many Unpaid Item Reports filed on her if she failed to respond? Yes, it would, but if she chose to give me four negatives they would remain on my feedback until she was kicked off. I just see this as ebay catering to all of the buyers and giving less support to their sellers. It will be interesting to see how it all washes out. For the record, I feel it is unfair. Oh, and she paid without me having to do a thing…two weeks after the auctions ended.
